戦前のバンクーバーで人気を博した日系人野球チーム「朝日」の元選手、上西ケイさんが100歳の誕生日を迎えた。1922年1月11日、バンクーバー生まれ。
家族に囲まれて迎えた百寿。「娘や息子がよくしてくれて」と声がはずむ。コミュニティや関係者からも祝福の言葉やカードが多く届き「うれしかったですね」と電話の向こうに笑顔が見えた。
戦前の朝日軍の野球は、現在バンクーバーで朝日ベースボールアソシエーションが結成している野球チーム「Asahi」が受け継いでいる。登録選手は約100人。上西さんも機会があるごとに「Asahi」の野球を観戦して楽しんでいる。
「色んなことがはっきりできないから、無理なこともありますけどね」とかすかに残る広島弁で話す上西さん。それでも「Asahi」の野球や選手たちとの交流をこれからも楽しみにしているようだった。
上西ケイさん（Kaye Koichi Kaminishi）
1922年1月11日、バンクーバー生まれ。その後、日本の教育を受けるために両親の故郷である広島に。1933年、11歳のときに母とともにバンクーバーに戻る。1939年、17歳でルーキーとして日系人野球チーム「朝日」に入団。約2年間、内野手として活躍した。1941年12月の日本軍による真珠湾攻撃を機にカナダ政府が日系人強制移動政策を実施、その後「朝日」は野球をする機会を失った。

その朝日軍オリジナルメンバーであるケイ上西さんにお目に掛かり直接お話を伺うことができ、また百寿の節目に立ち会えたことは、総領事としてだけではなく個人的にも大変名誉なことです。
日系コミュニティのレジェンドとして、いつまでもお健やかでいらっしゃいますよう、心からお祈りいたします。
